International Medical Student Scholarship Program

International Medical Student Scholarship Award. Established in 2024, this award is funded by the American Osler Society to support medical student research in the medical humanities. The award allows two medical students matriculated in an accredited allopathic or osteopathic medical school in the United States or Canada to carry out research using the rich and varied collections of the medical humanities in institutions in the United Kingdom, including rare books, archives and artifacts as well as other resources available in private and public collections in these locations.

Medical Humanities Research Areas supported by this Scholarship Award: Since medical humanities is an interdisciplinary field of medicine proposals addressing the history of medicine, application of the arts including literature, visual arts, theater, film, and music, and the disciplines of philosophy, medical anthropology, and medical sociology to medical education and practice will be considered.

Terms: The Society will offer awards totaling approximately $12,000 (US) each year, divided between two medical students, whose individual awards will be based on budgetary information included with their applications. Award funds are intended as reimbursement for travel, travel-related expenses, and accommodation for a 4-week period of research in the United Kingdom. Recipients are required to carry out their research in the United Kingdom in a 4-week period during the year after the award is provided

Requirements: This award is open to medical student interested in the medical humanities in the United States and Canada. The Society strongly encourages award recipients to submit a manuscript to a peer reviewed journal concerning the research carried out during their award. Recipients are required to submit a report of their work suitable for publication in the Oslerian, the Newsletter of the American Osler Society and to submit an abstract for presentation at the American Osler Society annual conference in the year following the award and research.
